Each school is staffed with a registered nurse during normal school hours. Records are maintained concerning student physical examinations, accidents, and visits to the nurse's office.
The school nurse provides health supervision and instruction and takes appropriate action in case of student illness and accidents occurring during the school day. The nurse should be informed of any health problems, such as physical limitations, activity restrictions, allergies, chronic diseases, medications, etc.
Routine screenings performed by the school nurse include:
K-6 and 9: vision
K-3 and 5: hearing
Physicals must be done prior to entering school, then again prior to grade 6 or 7 and grade 10. If is student enters in pre-k then a physical to upgrade their immunizations must also be done prior to entering kindergarten.
Students wishing to participate in sports must have a sports physical on file for the current calendar year.
DHS makes free sports physicals available to those who wish to use the service for convenience or for those whose insurance would not cover a sports physical at this time. Free physicals are given in June and November of each school year.
