HOME AND SCHOOL COMMUNICATION AND SUPPORT
In an effort to ensure a positive quality of school life for every student while engaging parents and other citizens as partners, Bradley School participated in a community-based “welcoming walkthrough” this past year to ascertain how families and other visitors are welcomed to the school. Bradley School strives to improve its communication efforts and involvement among staff, parents and extended families. Teachers communicate by contributing to school newsletters on a regular basis. A monthly school calendar is sent home as well, which alerts families to special occasions, early dismissals, etc. Teachers also distribute student planners/agendas to each student in grades 3-5, which are used to communicate homework and behavior issues on a daily basis to families. The Bradley School website provides links to events, standardized test scores, education-based websites and recent news articles about the school. A link to the PTA website brings families an opportunity to visit the Bradley School PTA’s Facebook page. The Derby Public Schools website also is updated regularly with important announcements, new policies and Board of Education meetings, agendas and minutes. Each teacher also has a website, which provides links to online textbooks and practice activities for students. The school uses a web-based automated call system, which allows the administrator and teachers to communicate important messages via telephone and email. In addition to regularly scheduled conferences and quarterly progress reports, the entire staff is equipped with email addresses, which they use to communicate professionally and in a timely fashion with families. Families are encouraged to visit the school and are invited to attend instruction-related activities and assorted field trips After-school activities draw large crowds to the school. Currently, families have access to a district-wide “parent portal” that provides student attendance data online; in the near future they will also be able to view academic records as well. Bradley School has a strong and active Parent/Teacher Association, which is continuously searching for new and effective ways to raise funds to support students. The PTA meets on a monthly basis at the school and has a core of about 20 parents who serve on numerous committees.
