VITAHLS

The VITAHLS Mission

The Derby School District is pleased to partner with the Valley Initiative to Advance Health & Learning in Schools (VITAHLS). VITAHLS brings together Grifin Hospital, the Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center (PRC), and the Derby, Ansonia, Oxford, Seymour, and Shelton school districts and the Emmett O'Brien Regional Vocational Technical School. The mission is to develop, implement, evaluate, and sustain a Velley-wide school-based childhood obesity prevention program to reduce the prevalence of obseity in students in grades Pre-K - 12. This exciting pilot initiative is being designed to serve as a model for all Connecticut schools. The goals are: (1) to reduce the prevalence of obesity and to promote the health, well-being, and academic readiness of students enrolled in the 5 Valley school districts; (2) to develop a comprehensive and sustainable obesity prevention initiative that focuses on nutrition and physical activity for children in grades Pre-K - 12; and (3) to extend the health promotion efforts to include parents/family and school staff.
