 Principal's Message

Dear Students and Parents/Guardians:

Welcome to what is sure to be a most exciting year at Derby High School!

We have spent the summer preparing our building (you’ll notice some changes as soon as you enter the building!) and our students’ schedules for the 2010-2011 school year. The staff and I are ready to go and I hope you are too!

Please note below special bulletins to help in planning for the beginning of the school year:

Our schedule has changed; please see the new 2010-2011 schedule found both on line and in our handbook/planners for students. We will begin the first two days of school with a special homeroom schedule. Students will be directed to their homeroom as they enter the school.

Mr. Gaillard and I will hold class meetings throughout our first day to reconnect with students and discuss some of the expectations for a positive and productive school year.

• All students will be receiving The Handbook for Students and Parents. There will also be a form brought home by students for parents/guardians to sign form called Affidavit of Responsibility. Please review the Handbook with your child, sign the Affidavit, and return it to school no later than Wednesday, September 8th.

 • For seniors who have a study hall during the first or last period of the day, we will have a permission form available that will allow SENIORS ONLY to start the day with their first class period or leave early if their schedule permits. Any senior wishing to take advantage of this must first have the form signed.

 • In an effort to encourage home/school communications, conferences to discuss student progress will be ongoing and scheduled throughout the year at the request of parents or teachers at a mutually agreed upon time.

Communication opportunities may include telephone conversations, team meetings, and individual parent teacher meetings, as well as e-mails, teacher newsletters, teacher websites, along with our parent “Back to School Night” and scheduled conference afternoon and night. Please take advantage of the many communication opportunities to keep apprised of how your child is doing at DHS both academically and socially.

I school will be visited at the end of September by a team from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). This team of educators will spend four days at DHS to review how we are meeting the Association’s Standards. More information about the visit and our accreditation will be forthcoming.

On behalf of the Derby High School Faculty and Staff, I look forward to sharing the school year with our students, and welcome and invite you to become an active part of our school community.

Sincerely,

Fran Thompson

Mr. Fran Thompson

Principal
